Why we're called [UNTITLED]
When an artist marks a work [UNTITLED], it means they've chosen not to explain it. That's where the name comes from. It's also why the rooftop bar is UNLISTED and the tattoo parlor is UNSCRIPTED INK. Everything here is named for what it leaves open.
[UNTITLED] has 200 rooms across fourteen floors at the end of a graffiti-covered service alley off the Bowery. Inside there's a gallery café, a tattoo parlor, a rooftop bar, and original art commissioned from local artists for every room.
Nobody agrees who Freeman was
Freeman Alley was cut for stable access and drainage, a service lane behind the tenements. Its name has never been settled. One account credits Uzal Freeman, a surveyor working these blocks in the 1800s. Another traces it to the Second African Burial Ground nearby. Neither has been proven.
There was a coffin factory here. The Bowery Mission's breadline ran through the alley to a back door. Freemans restaurant has held the dead end since 2004. At some point the walls started getting painted and they haven't stopped since. We didn't clean any of that up. The alley is the entrance, and it's the first thing you see.
What was here before
For most of the last century this address was where downtown put people who needed somewhere to stay. 223 Bowery ran as a single room occupancy house, then as a Salvation Army shelter. A bed, a meal, a door that closed. Fourteen floors of small rooms.
It closed in 2014, was gut renovated, and ran as Sister City under Ace Hotel before we took it over in 2023.
We're not going to dress that history up. It's what the building was, and we'd rather you heard it from us.
Thoughtfully Designed Accommodations
Rooms at [UNTITLED] run from the 125 sq ft Studio Mini to the Large Freeman suites — twelve room types across fourteen floors. They're all built around the same idea: big windows and great daylight, furniture that's simple and comfortable instead of decorative, a memory foam bed, blackout drapes for when you're done with the day, and a desk you can actually work at.
The art is ours alone. We commissioned local artists to make original pieces for the rooms, so what's on your wall isn't hanging in a hotel in another city.
Many rooms have balconies and the Sky rooms on the top floors give up a bit of space for the best part... a clear view across downtown!
Traveling as a group? The Double Bunk sleeps four and has the same design as every other room. Whichever room you book, Freeman Alley is right outside the front door.

UNLISTED, upstairs
UNLISTED serves craft cocktails and small plates with a panoramic view across the Manhattan skyline. We built it with Anurag Nema of Nemaworkshop. Mid-century interiors, closer to a downtown lounge than a hotel amenity.
It runs as a bar in its own right, not a guests-only room. Most nights the crowd is part neighborhood, part hotel, which is what gives it the energy of the blocks below.
